In Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff was impeached and ousted from office by the Senate. Her vice president and former ally Michel Temer was sworn in as the country’s new president. Brazilians took to the streets to either celebrate or protest the highly controversial process. In Mexico, the U.S. presidential campaign reared its head as Republican candidate Donald trump accepted an invitation to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto. Trump and Pena Nieto gave a joint press conference in which Trump appeared subdued. Hours later, he was back in the United States and reverted to form saying that he would make Mexico pay for building his proposed border wall. In Venezuela, hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets to pressure electoral authorities to allow a recall referendum against President Nicolas Maduro this year. Mexicans mourned the death of singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel, one the most beloved music stars in Latin America.
